When the worst happens
Finding that your friend has been killed, as bad as that situation can affect us, is still only the second worst scenario. The absolute worst thing, is when your friend disappears, never to return. The anguish of "not knowing" can torment for years. You must think positive thoughts. I know many, many people who have cared for and loved animals, in wonderful homes for years, and these pets have simply wandered into their lives, lost by others. If you never find your friend, chances are very good that he or she is living a good life in a nice home. It will be helpful to read the section on Dealing with Grief as you will go through these stages when a pet is never found.
It is important to wait for a while before getting a new pet. Too many people rush to get a new dog or cat and make a poor choice in a pet. Give careful consideration, wait a month or two and make certain you have a say in your new companion animal. Inform those around you that you are making a careful choice and you do not want to be surprised with a puppy or kitten.
